The Center for Natural History - CeNak -, Universität Hamburg invites applications for a

 

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE Curator of Entomology (Mecopteroidea: Lepidoptera, Trichoptera, etc.)

The position in accordance with Section 28 subsection 3 of the Hamburg higher education act (Hamburgisches Hochschulgesetz, HmbHG) commences on the earliest date possible.
This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG). The term is fixed until 31.12.2020.
The position calls for 39 hours per week.

Responsibilities:
Duties primarily include teaching and research. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Specific Duties:
Duties include the establishment of an indepedent line of research connected to the collection and the curation and management of part of the insect collection (Mecopteroidea) up to international standards (including databasing and publication of type catalogues, etc).
Research should be performed based on the research collection, can include morphology, taxonomy, systematics, molecular phylogenetics, population genetics, and / or evolutionary research, and should be up to current standards in the field (e.g. 3D reconstructions, NGS analyses).
It is required to publish results in scientific outlets, take part in the scientific process (reviewing) and present result at conferences. The applicant should apply for external funding to support their
own research program. Research should be performed in internal (specifically with the other two entomological groups), but also external national and international collaborations. Duties further include to advise Bachelor and Master students, as well as doctoral candidates. It is
encouraged to perform field work to expand the collection. Other duties include participation in public relations activities. The successful applicant will perform 3.2 semester hours of teaching in basic and advanced courses.

Specific Duties:

The successful applicant will be head and curator of the Department of Ornithology at CeNak, including curatorial responsibility for the ornithological collections.
Collection curation includes maintenance digital databasing of the bird collection, possibly expansion of the collection, and promoting scientific use of the collection.
The successful applicant will conduct independent, internationally competitive research in ornithology, particularly in taxonomy, morphology, molecular fields and/or biodiversity research.
Acquisition of extra-mural funding and teaching (3,2 LVS units per semester) are expected.
