18-22 May 2020: Biodiversity in the spotlight of next week world celebrations!

Sunday, 17 May, 2020

End of January, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity announced the theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2020: “Our Solutions are in Nature”.

The theme for the day shows that Biodiversity remains the answer to a number of sustainable development challenges that we all face. From nature-based solutions to climate, to food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity remains the basis for a sustainable future.

Since then, our global situation has completely changed due to the pandemic. Our current situation in conjunction with other threatening examples forces us to take active steps forward to halt biodiversity loss and restore ecosystems.

Twenty years ago, the UN designated 22 May as International Day for Biological Diversity, to mark the day on which the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was signed in 1992. Two days before that, the European Commission plans to unveil its EU 2030 biodiversity strategy and the related 'farm-to-fork' (F2F) strategy for sustainable food production.

Biodiversity Week 2020 will run from 18th to 22nd May, culminating with International Day of Biological Diversity on Friday 22nd May. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellations of physical social events, we are all hopefully still very connected in a virtual world which allow us to celebrate this important week in the calendar.

It's a good time for us to celebrate ‘biodiversity’ and to reflect on our dependence on nature.
